2013 Read-a-Thon art contest winner: Austin, 3rd grader
As an Austin Texas Honda dealership, we are extremely excited to announce that we will be the title sponsor of Bookspring’s 2013 Read-a-Thon. The Read-a-Thon will take place January 28 through February 8 at participating schools in Austin. Through the event, children read as much as they can, collect donations based on how much they read, and compete for prizes which are awarded after the results are tallied. Proceeds collected go directly to support Bookspring’s early literacy programs in the Greater Austin area.
Bookspring’s Read-a-Thon works this way: students register with their school’s team or as an individual, if their school is not participating, and log in the amount of time and number of pages read during the two-week period. At the same time, students solicit donations from friends and family based on the amount of pages they read. Once the Read-a-Thon period is over, children turn in their reading log and donations. Then, Bookspring volunteers tally the results and award prizes to students, classes and schools based on the amount of funds raised.
All of the donations collected from the Read-a-Thon event go directly to support Bookspring’s programs which help children, teen parents, and parents of young children who are living at or below the federal poverty level in the Greater Austin area. You can learn more about Bookspring’s programs, here.
We’ve been a big supporter of Bookspring for several years because we deeply believe in their mission of developing early childhood literacy. As Mr. Collier, Howdy’s General Manager, states “When people can’t read, they are not free; they will always depend on someone else.”
Bookspring’s Read-a-Thon also held an art contest inspired by this year’s theme “Be a Book Hero.” Students created artwork that represented the theme and competed for a $50 gift card to be used towards art materials. The winning art is the one at the top of the page and the four runners up are below.
