2013 Honda Civic achieves highest safety ratings among all small cars

Friday, May 17th, 2013

2013 CivicOur favorite small car, the Honda Civic is leading the small car segment in terms of safety ratings. The Civic received the highest possible rating from both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The 2013 Honda Civic sedan achieved the top 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA for their New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). The sedan and coupe also earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, including the top GOOD score in their new small overlap frontal collision test, making the Civic the first and only small car to receive this distinction.

“Car shoppers cannot find a small car with higher overall safety ratings than the 2013 Honda Civic,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. “Safety ratings leadership across product lines is a fundamental part of not only our strategic business plan, but also out philosophy as a company.”

This recent achievement puts Honda in an incredible place in the automotive marketplace. It is the only auto manufacturer with every single one of its tested model year 2013 vehicles earning a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

2013 CR-Z & Insight a USAA Best Value

2013 Honda Insight

USAA released its 2013 Best Value vehicles last month, naming the top automobiles that offer affordability, reliability, and safety. The 2013 Honda CR-Z and Honda Insight were both rated by USAA as a Best Value. The former was named in the Best Value List for the Coupe category and the Best Value for Teens. The later was named a Best Value for Teens.

The Best Value List presents vehicles that offer the, you guessed it, best overall value among all the vehicles that USAA evaluates as part of its USAA Preferred system. Their proprietary statistical model uses quantitative data to analyze vehicle’s cost, safety and reliability of over 70 automobiles. USAA Preferred vehicles rank in the top 40% of each vehicle category AND are an IIHS’s Top Safety Pick. The top vehicles for each category are included in the Best Value List.

As for the Top 10 for Teens list, USAA also selects USAA Preferred vehicles, but they have to cost less than $25,500 and rank highest in safety, reliability, and insurance costs – important factors for parents of teen drivers.

“This year we raised the bar on the importance of safety standards. Vehicles must earn a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tp qualify as USAA Preferred,” said Steve Thompson, vice president for USAA Car Buying Service. “A USAA Preferred vehicle is a great value financially, and is among the safest vehicles on the road.”

Consumer Reports’ Top Honda Picks for 2013

Monday, March 18th, 2013

After a year of no love shown to Honda by Consumer Reports, we’re back in business for 2013. In fact, Honda picked up three slots on this year’s Top Picks list; chosen from more than 280 vehicles the publication recently tested.

Earning a Top Pick status from Consumer Reports is no easy task. Each Top Pick has to excel in the road test, earn an average or better predicted-reliability rating, and perform adequately in independent safety tests conducted by government or insurance agencies.

The Consumer Reports’ Top Honda Picks for 2013 are:

Why the 2013 Honda Fit is better than its competitors

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Honda Fit Austin TX

While subcompact cars were originally considered just basic A-to-B transportation, they are becoming an increasingly important segment due to their great fuel economy, lower environmental impact and other concerns. As a result, subcompact vehicles now offer higher levels of standard equipment, performance and safety.

The 2013 Honda Fit is positioned to not only meet all of your expectations, but to exceed them as well. So much so that the Fit has been named one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best vehicles every year it has been sold in the U.S. and is the most highly rated vehicle in its class by numerous other automotive reviewers. Check out why no other subcompact vehicle can match the Fit’s features:

Honda Fit versus Toyota Yaris

  • • The Fit has more horsepower (117 vs. 106), torque (106 lb-ft vs. 103 lb-ft), cargo volume (20.6 cu ft vs. 15.6 cu ft), and passenger volume (90.8 cu ft vs. 85.1 cu ft).

    • The Fit’s ACE body structure and front head restraints are unavailable on the Yaris.

    • The Fit comes with standard cruise control, power windows, wheel-mounted controls, power side mirrors, and engine immobilizer.

    • The Fit has more headroom, legroom and hiproom (front and rear), and shoulder room (front).

    • The Fit has standard Radio Data System (RDS).

    • The Fit has available navigation system for the Fit Sport, but it’s unavailable on Yaris.

Honda Fit versus Nissan Versa

  • • The Fit has better city, highway and combined fuel economy (auto and manual).

    • The Fit’s ACE body structure is unavailable on the Versa.

    • Standard tilt and telescopic steering column (tilt only on Versa), driver’s vanity mirror, Radio Data System (RDS), Maintenance Minder™ system, security system, and cruise control.

    • USB Audio Interface5 on the Fit is optional on the Versa.

    • More hiproom (front and rear)

    • Standard MP3/WMA CD playback capability.

    • The Fit has much better residual values

Honda Fit versus Kia Rio 5-door

  • • Power windows, door and tailgate locks are standard on every Fit, but optional on the Rio LX

    • Cruise control is standard on all Fit trims, but unavailable on the Rio LX

    • Fit’s 2nd-row Magic Seat® makes cargo hauling a breeze, but Rio offers only a conventional split-folding rear seatback.

    • Fit has more cargo room behind the 2nd-row seats (20.6 cu ft vs. 15.0) as well as maximum cargo volume (57.3 cu ft vs. 49.8).

    • Fit has more passenger volume (90.8 cu ft vs. 88.4), more front headroom (40.4 in vs. 40.0), more rear headroom (39.0 in vs. 37.6) and over three inches more rear legroom (34.5 in vs. 31.1)

    • Every Fit comes with Brake Assist, a feature unavailable on any Rio

    • The rear stabilizer bar that helps make for greater handling prowess on the Fit Sport is unavailable on any Rio trim

    • Fit Sport standards such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, map lights, floor mats and fog lights are extra-cost options on Rio EX trims.

Honda Fit versus Ford Fiesta

  • • Fiesta offers no paddle shifters on its automatic-equipped models to compete with the dual-mode paddle-shifter system on AT-equipped Fit Sport trims.

    • No Fiesta trim has a rear stabilizer bar like the standard bar on the Fit Sport.

    • Fit’s passenger volume is greater than Fiesta’s by 5.7 cu ft, 90.8 vs. 85.1.

    • Fit has more front and rear headroom, more rear legroom, more front and rear hiproom, and more rear shoulder room than the Fiesta.

    • The Radio Data System (RDS), standard on all Fit models, is unavailable on Fiesta.

    • Fit’s standard air-filtration system is not available on Fiesta.

    • Unlike the Fit Sport, no Fiesta model is available with a navigation system.

    • Fit has enormous advantages in cargo-carrying capacity: 57.3 cu ft vs. Fiesta’s 26.0 cu ft behind the front row, and 20.6 cu ft vs. 15.4 cu ft behind the second-row seats.

    • Daytime Running Lights (DRL), a standard on all Fit trims, are unavailable on Fiesta.

    • Fit’s 2nd-row Magic Seat offers greater versatility than Fiesta’s split-fold 2nd-row seat

    • Active front head restraints, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution are standard on Fit, but are unavailable on Fiesta

Honda Fit versus Hyundai Accent

  • • The Fit is a 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick, a distinction that eludes the Accent.

    • Accent GLS and GS trims come with 14-inch steel wheels, compared to the 15-inch wheels on the Fit.

    • Fit has more front and rear headroom, more rear legroom, and more front and rear hiproom than the Accent.

    • The Fit has significantly higher ALG residual values than the Accent.

    • Cruise control comes standard on Fit.

    • The Fit has more cargo space (57.3 cu ft vs. 47.5 cu ft) and passenger volume (90.8 cu ft vs. 90.1 cu ft).

Honda gives you the best bang for your buck, says Kiplinger’s Personal Finance

2013 Honda Accord

2013 Honda Accord

Everyone wants to get a good value when they purchase a new vehicle. It makes sense, right? When you are making that large of an investment, you are going to want to get your money’s worth. Luckily, when you buy a new Honda, you are getting that value. This issue came up now because Kiplinger’s Personal Finance recently awarded both the 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Honda CR-V Best Value Awards.

The breakdown saw the Honda Accord win the ‘Best New Model’ category for cars priced between $30,000 and $40,000. The CR-V was named ‘Best in Class’ in the small crossover category. The awards were given out based on factors like performance, safety, value, price, roominess and driving impressions. So basically, every factor that is important to you as a car buyer is figured in when these awards are decided.

“With the 2013 redesign, Accord keeps its essential ingredients – a solid driver-to-road connection, comfy interior and high resale value – and spices things up with new technology and a more modern exterior,” said Jessica Anderson, associate editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. “Additionally, in an increasingly crowded segment, CR-V is the ideal others aspire to.”

So it’s pretty simple. Buying a new Honda is a sound investment being that the cars hold the best value. The Kiplinger’s award is just one in a long list of awards that prove how valuable Honda vehicles really are. Check them out in person here at Howdy Honda, the friendliest car dealership in Austin TX!

Honda vehicles are very green according to ACEEE

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013
Honda Insight Austin TX

Honda Insight

Have you heard of the ACEEE ranking system? Standing for American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the ACEEE every year recognizes and ranks the greenest cars in the market. For 2013, five Honda vehicles earned a “green” recognition. These include the Honda Fit EV, Insight, Civic Hybrid, Fit and Odyssey.

The Fit EV, Insight and Civic Hybrid made the list of ACEEE’s 12 most “greenest” vehicles, while the 2013 Honda Fit and Honda Odyssey were named as “greener choices of 2013.”

The ACEE ranking system uses many different factors when determining the green factor of a vehicle. Among them are the vehicle’s fuel economy, pollution impact, as well as global warming and upstream emissions. The result is a list that contains some of the best and most efficient cars on the market today.

Honda is very committed to the efficiency movement as can be seen from the new car lineup that it produces year after year. “Honda’s vision for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which is reflected in our environmental slogan of “Blue Skies for our Children,” inspires us to lead and innovate in every aspect of our operations, from our product engineering and manufacturing practices to our upstream sales and service activities,” said Steven Center of American Honda.

Sporting great fuel efficiency and a great overall ride, these Honda vehicles (expect for the Fit EV, boo!) can be found right here at your favorite Austin TX Honda dealership.

Honda Gear Concept surprises in Montreal

Honda Gear concept

Honda Gear concept

Honda definitely knows how to keep things interesting. After debuting the Urban SUV Concept at the North American International Auto Show days before, the company surprised everyone by unveiling another car at the Montreal International Auto Show. Although the company says it is purely a concept only, the Gear, as it was labeled, certainly took many by surprise.

As a concept is supposed to, the Gear gained a lot of interest at the show – and it doesn’t resemble anything already out on the market. The inspiration, Honda says, is fixed-gear bicycles. So we are left to wonder how exactly the vehicle would be powered. Fixed-gear bikes are used in many cities to reduce vehicle use and are very popular right here in Austin.

The Gear, from an appearance standpoint, is a very smooth coupe with a hatchback. The interior is designed for personalization and technology appears to be a big part of what it would bring to the table. Of course, that’s if the vehicle is ever to exist. Right now Honda says the Gear is a pure thinking exercise with no production plans.

So with the two concept releases – one coming soon and one strictly concept – Honda made a play at two different markets. But the overriding theme of small cars was intact with both.

As your Austin Honda dealer, we are certainly intrigued by what Honda brings to these auto shows and often speculate as to what features/characteristics/concepts will make it to the production line. We feel like the Gear would be a big hit. What do you think? Would you be interested in something like it?

honda odyssey austin tx

The fairest minivan of them all (or at least our favorite) has another crown to put on its shelf. This time the Honda Odyssey has won Cars.com’s annual Best Family Car of the Year award for its awesomeness.

The 2013 Odyssey was selected in the company’s Lifestyle Awards for Best Family Car of the Year. Now how does a vehicle land this great award? Well, Cars.com has its due process – not any car can claim a Lifestyle Award.

For one of these awards, a vehicle must first selected as one of Cars.com’s Best Bets. Best Bets have:

  • 1. ratings of Acceptable or higher in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests,
  • 2. a reliability rating of average or higher,
  • 3. strong ride and handling, and
  • 4. average or better gas mileage for its segment.

The Odyssey excels in all of those areas and more. That is why it was named Best Family Car of the Year. The minivan designers knew which features would keep parents happy (safety, great storage, entertainment, great mileage, flexibility and functionality), which is why the Odyssey is the best minivan in the market today.

You need to check out all of the features that the 2013 Honda Odyssey offers if you’re a parent in the market for a minivan. It seriously rock.

Eleven 2013 Honda models named Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS

Friday, January 18th, 2013

2013 Honda Accord austin tx

If safety is what you’re looking for in your new car, you can bet you have it in a 2013 Honda. In fact, you can actually take your pick among the lineup of eleven 2013 Honda models because they all passed the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests with the highest possible ratings.

The completely redesigned 2013 Honda Accord (sedan and coupe) took the crown among all earning a TOP SAFETY PICK+ by passing the new small overlap frontal crash test which now has more aggressive and stringent guidelines. This test replicates what happens when the front corner of a car crashes with another vehicle or an object (tree, utility pole, etc.). And the new Accord is one of the first vehicles ever to earn this safety rating.

If you’re looking for something that the Accord doesn’t offer, do not worry because the 2013 Civic Sedan, 2013 Fit, 2013 Crosstour, 2013 CR-V, 2013 CR-Z, 2013 Insight, 2013 Pilot, 2013 Odyssey and 2013 Ridgeline were also named TOP SAFETY PICK by the IIHS. All of the models earned the top rating of GOOD in the four rating areas tested.

Honda has a long history of engineering advanced safety technology and designs into their products. This commitment stems from their goal to be a company that society wants to exist. We’ve made this commitment as well. Although we can’t manufacture vehicles, we CAN and DO try our absolute hardest to be the Honda dealer in Austin that the city wants to exist. I hope you can help us achieve this goal (in your safe Honda, of course).

UPDATE: The redesigned 2013 Honda Civic (both sedan and coupe models) have earned the Top Safety Pick+ recognition as well! This is the first small car in the US to achieve the enhanced safety pick status, making Honda the only automaker to offer four different vehicles with Top Safety Pick+ marks.

Honda unveils all-new small SUV concept

Honda Urban SUV Concept | Austin Honda Dealer

Today at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Honda introduced for the very first time the all-new Honda “Urban SUV Concept.” A teaser image of the small SUV had been released about a month ago and today Honda officially presented the brand new vehicle.

Expected to launch in the US in 2014, the dynamic and youthful concept is Honda’s first entrance into the growing small-SUV segment. The new vehicle will target customers with an active lifestyle with its aspirational design, next-generation connectivity, fuel-efficiency, and fun-to-drive character. Its styling is clean and sophisticated with dynamic lines and a strong stance. The rear door handles are hidden, giving the SUV a coupe-like feel, and it’s a full nine inches shorter than the Honda CR-V.

Honda Urban SUV Concept | Austin Texas Honda dealerJohn Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda, went even further into details confirming that the SUV will have the new Earth Dreams Technology and will be priced below the Honda CR-V. He also indicated that the model will include Honda’s famous Magic Seat setup which provides a myriad of passenger/cargo options and will feature next-generation telematics.

Better than we imagined when we saw the teaser image, this small SUV looks and sounds incredibly exciting. With a hint of Acura, we’ll have another awesome Honda in Austin TX next year!
