Honda Smart Home to produce zero-carbon living

Honda Smart Home

Honda Smart Home Rendering

While we were trying to be more eco-friendly by banning the use of plastic bags and buying hybrid cars, Honda was developing a project that will make our efforts seem like child’s play. The Honda Smart Home US concept home is at the vanguard of energy efficiency and environmental consciousness, and gives us a glimpse as to what the future might hold for homeowners.

This past week Honda announced the creation of the Honda Smart Home US (HSH) at the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction site on the campus of University of California, Davis, marking the beginning of the building process. The HSH is a “showcase for environmental innovation and renewable energy enabling technologies that demonstrates Honda’s vision for sustainable, zero-carbon living and personal mobility, including the use of solar power to charge a Honda Fit EV battery,” says a Honda press release.

This sustainable home will feature an array of technologies that will greatly reduce the energy consumed by individual households while fully providing for the needs of an electric vehicle. The home will also offer its occupants control over all the systems in the house, allowing residents to remotely and continually monitor and adjust all aspects of energy use in real time.

So how will the HSH achieve “zero net energy”?

1. A solar power system will be installed to provide the energy for the home and electric vehicle.

2. A Honda Energy Management System will actively manage energy use, allowing the home to maximize its energy efficiency while responding to the needs of the electrical grid. This will minimize the impacts of solar energy generation and electric vehicle charging on the utility grid.

3. UC Davis energy research centers will design efficient, cost effective solutions to major home energy loads like heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems.

4. The electric vehicle charging will be connected directly to the solar system to avoid the CO2 emitted by grid electricity production.

5. The home will feature passive design elements and novel material to further reduce the CO2 emissions from the production of building materials and the construction and operation of the home.

Honda expects the home to be completed by the end of 2013. You can follow the building process through the HSH website.

Although this is years away from being remotely available, I can’t wait to have this type of Honda in Austin!

A Honda App that Can Ease Traffic Flow

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Honda-Traffic-AppA new smartphone application developed by Honda can help traffic flow by predicting congestion and alerting drivers in order to avoid bottlenecks from happening in the first place. Bottlenecks (named after the curves on Coke glass bottles) are caused by rapid slowdowns on certain spots and create traffic build up, while in front the traffic is relatively free-flowing.

Honda’s app monitors the driver’s acceleration and deceleration pattern over time to predict if a certain pattern (like heavy breaking) could cause a traffic jam. It then coaches the driver to decrease the abrupt acceleration and breaking.

Honda tested the app between September and February on both a single car and as a connected network of cars using the app. On both tests, the app helped delay traffic congestion by an average of three to four minutes and reduce changes in average speed by 60 to 70 percent. An even better result was that fuel economy improved by 20 to 22 percent.

Although the app can’t eliminate traffic altogether, it has the potential to help alleviate and improve traffic flow. The app is not yet available, but Honda said it will eventually embed the system on Honda models.

Next Gen Civic Hybrid to Get New Two-Motor System

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Honda Civic Hybrid Austin TX

Toshihiro Mibe, managing officer in charge of powertrain development at Honda R&D Co., recently announced to Automotive News at an industry conference that the next-generation Honda Civic Hybrid will get a two-motor system.

As part of Honda’s overhaul of its powertrain lineup, the new two-motor system aims to vastly improve the hybrid’s fuel economy. In fact, Honda is thinking about two types of two-motor systems; one for the Accord Hybrid and one for the Civic.

The two-motor layout permits extensive electric-only driving, with one motor powering the wheels and the other recharging the batteries. The difference between the systems would be the battery capacity.

Mibe stated that the fuel economy delivered will be much better than that of the current generation, but he wasn’t able to provide figures. Currently, the Civic Hybrid uses a one-motor system that is 30 percent more efficient than the Integrated Motor Assist, motor found on non-hybrid Honda models.

The Honda LaneWatch blind spot display wins innovation award

Honda LaneWatch

Honda LaneWatch

The blind spot has long been an issue for drivers. The name says it all; the spot that drivers can’t be seen in the side mirror. Many accidents through the years have been attributed to the blind spot.

Honda, looking to eliminate the blind spot, developed the new Honda LaneWatch Blind Spot Display. This technology includes a camera in the side mirror and displays the blind spot on a screen inside the car. This is activated when the driver activates or presses a button on the turn signal. The result is a view range about four times greater than the average field of view and a safer overall driving experience.

This revolutionary Honda technology made its debut on the 2013 Honda Accord, and it’s now available on the 2013 Honda Crosstour. LaneWatch has proven to be an innovation that drivers greatly appreciate. In fact, the technology just won a Good Housekeeping 2013 “Very Innovative Products” (VIP) Award; validating its value since products from the automotive world rarely win this award.

“LaneWatch is an intuitive visibility technology that represents the sort of innovation that consumers have come to expect from Honda,” said Mike Accavitti of American Honda.

You can go by your Austin TX Honda dealer to check out the LaneWatch for yourself on the new Accord or Crosstour. Give us a call at 512-443-4300 to schedule your test drive.

Honda Brings Inventors from the 2013 Civic TV Campaign to Your Social Media Account

2013 Civic: Things Can Always Be Better

By now you’ve probably seen the TV commercial for the 2013 Honda Civic that features crazy inventions like an origami stroller, waterfall swing and laser keyboard. This Civic campaign is a way for Honda to bridge their philosophy of innovative thinking and continuous improvement with other inventors who are also working to develop better solutions. Well, the TV ad sparked a ton of curiosity about the featured innovations and for that reason Honda launched a collection of online live chats with the inventors, called #HondaInnovator Series.

The Innovator Series uses Twitter to conduct tweet chats scheduled throughout the month of February. Each chat is one-hour long and features a different inventor. People are able to ask questions through Twitter and Hondainnovator.com. Honda also uses Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube to create curiosity and drive conversations through highlighted feeds and innovator-created videos.

The tweet chats are scheduled as follows:

  • Tues., Feb. 5: Pheonix Flye with pro wongsuiter James “Macca” Macdonald at Noon CT
  • Thurs., Feb. 7: 4moms Origami Stroller with co-founder Henry Thorne at Noon CT
  • Tues., Feb. 12: Billabong V1 Wetsuit with pro surfer/inventor Shane Dorian at Noon CT
  • Fri., Feb. 15: 2013 Honda Civic Sr. Product Planner Jay Guzowski at Noon CT
  • Wed., Feb. 20: Waterfall Swing with inventors Ian Charnas and Drew Ratcliff at 2pm CT
  • Tues., Feb. 26: Laser Keyboard with visionary Prashanth Shantharam at Noon CT

“The ‘Innovator Series’ is designed to applaud all visionaries…and provide an opportunity to engage with them,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The 2013 Civic speaks to our passion for innovative thinking and continuous improvement and through social media we’re inviting all creative thinkers to come together to talk about how to make things better.”

Honda to integrate Siri technology in vehicles

Thursday, February 7th, 2013
Honda Siri 2013 Accord Austin TX

Honda hopes to take distracted driving away with Siri in vehicles.

Anyone with an iPhone 4S or 5 knows how convenient Apple’s Siri technology can be. Siri is the “intelligent assistant” on the iPhone that helps you get things done; you’ve probably seen the commercials where someone asks the phone a question and gets an answer. Well, this technology is now heading to Honda and Acura vehicles.

Honda just announced that it is integrating Siri into the 2013 Accord and Acura RDX and ILX as a dealer installed option to provide hands-free communication for drivers. Using an Eyes Free mode, owners of iPhones running on iOS 6 can ask Siri to perform various specific tasks via the Bluetooth HandsFreeLink. The new Siri integration will minimize distracted driving even more by not only providing hands-free connectivity and functionality, but also keeping your device’s screen from lighting up.

“Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Free mode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet…ever-changing needs,” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of American Honda automobile product planning.

Will you be adding Siri to your 2013 Honda Accord? Your Austin TX Honda dealership will be glad to help.

Honda vehicles are very green according to ACEEE

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013
Honda Insight Austin TX

Honda Insight

Have you heard of the ACEEE ranking system? Standing for American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the ACEEE every year recognizes and ranks the greenest cars in the market. For 2013, five Honda vehicles earned a “green” recognition. These include the Honda Fit EV, Insight, Civic Hybrid, Fit and Odyssey.

The Fit EV, Insight and Civic Hybrid made the list of ACEEE’s 12 most “greenest” vehicles, while the 2013 Honda Fit and Honda Odyssey were named as “greener choices of 2013.”

The ACEE ranking system uses many different factors when determining the green factor of a vehicle. Among them are the vehicle’s fuel economy, pollution impact, as well as global warming and upstream emissions. The result is a list that contains some of the best and most efficient cars on the market today.

Honda is very committed to the efficiency movement as can be seen from the new car lineup that it produces year after year. “Honda’s vision for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which is reflected in our environmental slogan of “Blue Skies for our Children,” inspires us to lead and innovate in every aspect of our operations, from our product engineering and manufacturing practices to our upstream sales and service activities,” said Steven Center of American Honda.

Sporting great fuel efficiency and a great overall ride, these Honda vehicles (expect for the Fit EV, boo!) can be found right here at your favorite Austin TX Honda dealership.

Automakers become more involved at Consumer Electronics Show

Friday, January 11th, 2013

automakers 2013 ces As cars get more technologically advanced, it’s natural that automakers make their presence known within the tech scene. Part of that is attending the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show this year. The C.E.S. as it’s known, is one of the premier electronics shows in the country and its going on right now in Las Vegas.

So what can you expect to see at the show from automakers? Well, it appears one of the big focuses this year is on electric vehicles and the pairing of them with home and public charging stations. This will no doubt be a big step in getting consumers familiar with the ways electric vehicles integrate into daily life. While we currently don’t carry the Honda Fit EV here at Howdy Honda, your Austin Honda dealer, we hope Honda expands the distribution of the Fit EV into Texas.

In addition to electric vehicles, the “connected car” will be on full display as well. It is expected that the smartphone-vehicle integration will play a big role in the innovations presented by automakers at the show. Apple might have some skin in the game too since last year they announced that its popular Siri voice recognition would be integrated into vehicle technology. Other items expected to make waves at the show include: 3D dash instrument cluster, in-car apps, vehicle safety and communication technology, and open-source software that will further vehicle entertainment system integration.

This is an exciting time to be involved in the automotive industry. If you want to see a very technologically advanced vehicle right here in Austin, you should check out the new 2013 Accord. Its innovative and advanced technology has been gaining national attention since its release back in September 2012.

HondaLink Connectivity & Connection Tips

Friday, November 16th, 2012

hondalink

HondaLink app

The 2013 Accord EX-L sedan and higher trims, as well as the EX coupe and higher trims, are equipped with the HondaLink. The following is an overview of the login/registration process and some connection tips.

Logging in

After downloading HondaLink featuring Aha application from the Apple App Store or Andriod Play Store:

1. Use your HondaID and password to log into HondaLink. Your HondaID username and password is the same one you use for the Honda OwnerLink. If you don’t have an OwnerLink account, select Register and follow the registration steps. If you are having trouble logging in using your HondaID, please contact Honda Automobile Customer Relations (ACR) at 800-999-1009.

2. Once logged into HondaLink, your HondaID needs to be associated with an Aha account.

            – If you’re an Aha listener, select “Yes, I’ll log in” and input your credentials.

            – If you’re new to Aha, select “No, sign me up” and you will be guided through the account creation steps.

Connection tips:

       - Android phones must be connected by Bluetooth in order to work with Pandora or Aha. This requires that the phone be paired to the vehicle and that the connection priority in the audio system be set to “Bluetooth.”

       – Apple iPhones can be connected by USB or Bluetooth. We recommend using USB as the connection method. This requires you to use an USB cable to connect your iPhone to the vehicle and that the connection priority is set to USB. You can still make and receive calls using Bluetooth HandsFreeLink as long as the phone is paired to the Accord.
