Howdy Honda: Passion for Environment and Customer Service

Tuesday, March 24th, 2015

As a larger Austin business, Howdy Honda had already implemented the city’s universal recycling ordinance. But, after personal experience with environmental initiatives at home, General Manager Cliff Collier wanted to go further. He’d added 21 solar panels to his 2,600 square-foot home about three years ago; since then, his energy bills have dropped significantly, and he gets credits in the winter.

“I saw the results at home and wanted to do it here,” he says. “The cost savings makes it easy, but it’s also the right thing to do – we have to take care of this planet.”

Since then, the dealership has made significant environmental modifications that have resulted in big changes – and much less of an environmental impact. Of course, seeing is believing — and this aerial video says it all.

Collier and Howdy Honda have worked with Circular Energy on a complete environmental overhaul over the last three years, including installing the 706 rooftop solar panels you see in the video, as well as replacing all exterior mercury vapor lights with LED alternatives, and all incandescent interior lighting with fluorescents.

Those efforts recently earned the dealership a Gold Award as part of Honda’s national Environmental Leadership initiative. Launched in 2012, the core of the voluntary dealer program includes a 10 percent reduction in energy use, water conservation, and recycling.

Honda has been working to reduce the environmental impact of its products, manufacturing and logistics operations, and facilities in North America over the last 30 years, so expanding its environmental initiatives to dealers was a logical next step.

As independent businesses, each Honda dealer is responsible for developing strategies to reduce their environmental impact – and Collier and team took that to heart. While the award wasn’t Collier’s goal, he’s proud of the recognition.

“Qualifying is a level of accomplishment – it exhibits the fact that we’re doing something positive for the environment,” says Collier. “Now, our goal is to add motion-initiated light switches and other modifications and get to the Platinum level.”

A better customer experience

Collier and the team at Howdy Honda were also recently honored with the 2014 Honda President’s Award. The award is a reflection of the entire dealership scorecard – buying, selling, service, and parts – and the dealership was the only Honda store in the Austin market area to receive it.

“It’s about the total dealership experience – no matter what the need – and we’ve been able to fill it at a level of quality that’s tops in the industry,” says Collier, who has been general manager of Howdy Honda for the last 26 years. “In this business, success is about working hard and treating people well. When people come to Howdy Honda, they’ll be treated better than anywhere.”

The Honda Smart Home Offers Zero Carbon Living and Mobility

Monday, March 31st, 2014

スライド 1

The Honda Smart Home is now complete! Honda first announced the development of the Smart Home project last year. It all started with this concept  and the completion of this eco-friendly foundation at the beginning of the year. Honda’s smart home was designed to generate more electricity than it consumes. Not only that, it can even power an electric Honda Fit with renewable energy. The Honda Smart Home is located in UC Davis West Village and a university faculty or staff member will live in the home for three years, during which Honda will collect data on how well the home performs. That data will then be published for academic researchers and utility companies to analyze.

This 1,944 square foot home uses renewable energy sources, sustainable building materials, and innovative construction techniques. The average home consumes 13.3 megawatt hours of electricity each year. The Honda Smart Home concept drastically reduces the amount of energy consumption with an impressive 2.6 megawatt hours. Mostly due to a 9.5 kW solar array on the roof. Some of the solar power stored goes directly to a Honda Fit EV which comes with the house. The Honda Fit can charge in just 2 hours!

“We are focused on more than just mobility,” said Michael Koenig, project leader. “As a society, we really need to look beyond just vehicles.” Only about a third of an average household’s carbon footprint is due to vehicle use. The Honda Smart Home aims to cut not only that, but the additional energy consumption that comes from lighting, heating, and air conditioning. In addition to solar panels, the Smart Home features a geothermal heat pump for hot water, heating and cooling. Shutters and vents open and close automatically for passive heating and cooling and all hot water pipes are designed to keep water travel distance as short as possible to minimize heat loss.

Koenig calls the Smart Home the “house of the near future,” and stresses that 90 percent of the technology involved in building the home is off-the-shelf and available today. “They’re not quite in the mainstream conversations people are having when they’re building their homes or remodeling their homes,” Koenig said.

Here is a time lapsed video of the Smart Home construction:
