“Most Trusted Brand” among New-Car Shoppers in the US

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013
KBB Brand Image Awards 2013

KBB Brand Image Awards 2013

New-car shoppers have once again spoken in Kelley Blue Book’s 2013 Brand Image Award study and the verdict is clear. Among all of the auto manufacturers, Honda kicks butt. Period.

For the second time, Honda was named “Most Trusted Brand” and, for the third consecutive year, “Best Value Brand.” However, the awards didn’t stop there. Honda also took home top honors by claiming “Best Overall Non-Luxury Brand,” officially making Honda the brand with most awards in the 2013 study.

The Brand Image Awards are based on new-car shopper’s perception data from KBB’s Brand Watch study. The research study annually looks at more than 12,000 in-market new-vehicle shoppers and offers insights into their perceptions of brands. The “Best Overall Non-Luxury Brand” Award is received by the brand who achieves the highest average score across ratings of all non-luxury models and the weight of importance of each of the factors in the study.

The “Must Trusted Brand” Award, on the other hand, has only been won by Honda since its inception two years ago. That speaks to Honda’s reputation for building solid vehicles that instill confidence and trust among car shoppers.

NHTSA Releases New SafeCar App

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

safecar app

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the government agency under the US Department of Transportation in charge of carrying out safety programs for traffic and vehicle safety, just announced the release of their SafeCar app for smartphones.

The new app provides the safety ratings of vehicles, but the real kick of the app is that it allows you to register your vehicle and receive recall and safety notifications (were your car involved in one). Besides that, it lets you file vehicle complaints with the NHTSA, get directions to the nearest child-seat inspection station and read NHTSA headlines.

The app is free and, although only currently available for the iOS platform (iPhone, iPad, iPod), the agency is working on developing the Android version.

2013 Civic: Things Can Always Be Better

By now you’ve probably seen the TV commercial for the 2013 Honda Civic that features crazy inventions like an origami stroller, waterfall swing and laser keyboard. This Civic campaign is a way for Honda to bridge their philosophy of innovative thinking and continuous improvement with other inventors who are also working to develop better solutions. Well, the TV ad sparked a ton of curiosity about the featured innovations and for that reason Honda launched a collection of online live chats with the inventors, called #HondaInnovator Series.

The Innovator Series uses Twitter to conduct tweet chats scheduled throughout the month of February. Each chat is one-hour long and features a different inventor. People are able to ask questions through Twitter and Hondainnovator.com. Honda also uses Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube to create curiosity and drive conversations through highlighted feeds and innovator-created videos.

The tweet chats are scheduled as follows:

  • Tues., Feb. 5: Pheonix Flye with pro wongsuiter James “Macca” Macdonald at Noon CT
  • Thurs., Feb. 7: 4moms Origami Stroller with co-founder Henry Thorne at Noon CT
  • Tues., Feb. 12: Billabong V1 Wetsuit with pro surfer/inventor Shane Dorian at Noon CT
  • Fri., Feb. 15: 2013 Honda Civic Sr. Product Planner Jay Guzowski at Noon CT
  • Wed., Feb. 20: Waterfall Swing with inventors Ian Charnas and Drew Ratcliff at 2pm CT
  • Tues., Feb. 26: Laser Keyboard with visionary Prashanth Shantharam at Noon CT

“The ‘Innovator Series’ is designed to applaud all visionaries…and provide an opportunity to engage with them,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The 2013 Civic speaks to our passion for innovative thinking and continuous improvement and through social media we’re inviting all creative thinkers to come together to talk about how to make things better.”

Honda unveils all-new small SUV concept

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Honda Urban SUV Concept | Austin Honda Dealer

Today at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Honda introduced for the very first time the all-new Honda “Urban SUV Concept.” A teaser image of the small SUV had been released about a month ago and today Honda officially presented the brand new vehicle.

Expected to launch in the US in 2014, the dynamic and youthful concept is Honda’s first entrance into the growing small-SUV segment. The new vehicle will target customers with an active lifestyle with its aspirational design, next-generation connectivity, fuel-efficiency, and fun-to-drive character. Its styling is clean and sophisticated with dynamic lines and a strong stance. The rear door handles are hidden, giving the SUV a coupe-like feel, and it’s a full nine inches shorter than the Honda CR-V.

Honda Urban SUV Concept | Austin Texas Honda dealerJohn Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda, went even further into details confirming that the SUV will have the new Earth Dreams Technology and will be priced below the Honda CR-V. He also indicated that the model will include Honda’s famous Magic Seat setup which provides a myriad of passenger/cargo options and will feature next-generation telematics.

Better than we imagined when we saw the teaser image, this small SUV looks and sounds incredibly exciting. With a hint of Acura, we’ll have another awesome Honda in Austin TX next year!

Why is the 2013 Honda Civic better than its compact car competitors?

Monday, January 14th, 2013

2013 Honda Civic Austin TXA renewed emphasis on affordability and fuel efficiency is making the compact car segment more important and competitive than ever before. Fortunately, the 2013 Civic is ideally positioned to excel against all competitors. See how it stacks up against some of its top competitors:

2013 Honda Civic Coupe vs. 2013 Scion tC

The Scion tC is a serious compact coupe, well-equipped competitor with many features. The 2013 Civic Coupe counters with four available models, the LX, EX, EX-L and the extra-sporty Si, giving you more choice. Add Civic’s impressive list of standard features, including fog lights on the EX-L — a $340 option on the tC — and the total is definitely more than the sum of its parts.

  • • For automatic-equipped models, the Civic Coupe outshines the tC’s fuel efficiency ratings by a remarkable 5 mpg in the city, 8 mpg on the highway and 6 mpg combined (Civic: 28/39/32 vs. tC: 23/31/26)*.
  • • The Civic has more front legroom than the tC.
  • • To help protect carpets, all Civic Coupes come with floor mats, while you must spend $184 to get floor mats on the tC.
  • • The Civic has a tighter turning circle than the tC.
  • • The Civic’s side curtain airbags have a rollover sensor, a safety feature you won’t get on the tC.

2013 Honda Civic Coupe vs. 2013 Kia Forte Koup EX

Kia models in general are getting more attention from car shoppers in recent years. The Forte Koup is generally regarded as stylish, but the 2013 Civic Coupe is exciting inside and out, with sophisticated exterior styling and upgraded interior. Add features such as Civic’s standard moonroof on EX and above trims — a $750 option on the Forte — and it’s easy to see why the Civic is a best-seller.

  • • The Civic’s fuel efficiency is markedly better than the Forte’s — 3 mpg better in the city and a significant 5 mpg better on the highway for automatic-equipped models (Civic: 28/39 vs. Forte: 25/34)*.
  • • While the Civic Coupe features a multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar, the Koup’s down-scale torsion beam design has no stabilizer bar.
  • • The Civic Coupe comes standard with a rearview camera with guidelines. To get one on the Koup, you must purchase the EX Technology Package for an extra $1,800.
  • • Every Civic Coupe gets the safety of Daytime Running Lights, while Koup buyers must purchase the EX Technology Package (a $1,800 extra) to get them.
  • • For navigation-equipped models, FM Traffic is free on the Civic Coupe. The Koup’s available navigation system has SiriusXM Traffic, which requires a subscription fee (after the three-month free trial).

2013 Honda Civic Sedan vs. 2013 Toyota Corolla

One of the Civic’s top competitors, the long-running Toyota Corolla is also an institution in the U.S. car market. While it’s a favorite of economy-driven buyers, the Corolla doesn’t match the Civic’s many advantages, including its long list of standard features and better driving dynamics.

  • • The Civic has 6% more horsepower from the same displacement.
  • • The Civic’s available 5-speed automatic transmission surpasses the Corolla’s 4-speed automatic.
  • • Civic’s fuel-efficiency rating is better with 2 mpg more in the city, 5 mpg on the highway and 3 combined for automatic-equipped models (Civic: 28/39/32 vs. Corolla: 26/34/29)*.
  • • The Civic sedan has standard rollover sensors, a safety feature not available on Corolla.
  • ALG residual values are higher for the Civic.

2013 Honda Civic Sedan vs. 2013 Chevrolet Cruze

This strong contender is available in five models and comes standard with Bluetooth phone connectivity for select phones. Of course, all seven 2013 Civic models have standard Bluetooth HandsFreeLink and many standard connectivity features, including the SMS text message function, not available on Cruze.

  • • Civic has a larger engine and more horsepower, and still has better fuel-efficiency ratings than the automatic transmission equipped Cruze (Civic: 28/39/32 vs. Cruze: 26/38/30)*.
  • • All Civic sedans come standard with a rearview camera with guidelines; however, for the Cruze you must purchase the Technology Package for $550 to have a rearview camera.
  • ALG residual values are generally higher for the Civic.
  • • Edmunds.com True Cost To Own figures significantly favor the Civic.

2013 Honda Civic Sedan vs. 2013 Ford Focus

Other than dropping the SEL trim and making some changes to standard and optional equipment, the 2013 Ford Focus sedan is basically a carryover from 2012. The sedan is available in S, SE and Titanium models while the Honda Civic is available in LX, EX and EX-L as well as the sporty Si, fuelmiser HF, hybrid and the natural gas-powered models.

  • • The Civic excels in fuel-efficiency ratings, beating the Focus with PowerShift across the board (Civic: 28/39/32 vs. Focus: 27/38/31)*.
  • • For additional comfort and convenience, a center console with sliding armrest and storage compartment is a standard feature on all Civic sedans, but you won’t find it on the Focus.
  • • Civic EX Sedan offers more rear legroom and front shoulder room than the Focus.
  • • Pandora® internet radio interface is standard on all Civic trims, but it’s not available on the Focus.
  • • Civic’s rearview camera with guidelines is standard on all Civic models; the Ford’s camera is only available on the automatic transmission-equipped Titanium trim with the Active Park Assist option that costs $395.
  • • The Civic Sedan typically has a higher ALG residual value than the Focus.

2013 Honda Civic Sedan vs. 2013 Hyundai Elantra

For 2013, Elantra has upped the number of standard features for both GLS and Limited, but all these standard features add up to a higher price. The Civic Sedan, however, offers seven well equipped, fuel-efficient and budget-friendly models, with a myriad of great, new standard features.

  • • Civic either beats or matches Elantra’s fuel-efficiency ratings (Civic: 28/39/32 vs. Elantra: 28/38/32)*.
  • • Civic has significantly more rear legroom than the GLS.
  • • Civic Sedan has a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar; Elantra’s economical torsion-beam design has no stabilizer bar.
  • • A rearview camera with guidelines is only available on the Elantra Limited trim with technology package, while all Civic models offer it standard.
  • Bluetooth1 HandsFreeLink and a sliding center armrest come standard on all Civic models; they add $750 to the price of an Elantra GLS (Preferred Package).

2013 Honda Civic Sedan vs. 2013 Mazda3

The Mazda’s smiley-face grille is still with us and so are many of the Mazda3’s features. Mazda3 comes in the i Series and S Series.

  • • A moonroof is standard on Civic EX and above models. To get one on the i Touring trim, you must spend $1,600 for the Preferred Equipment Package.
  • Bluetooth1 HandsFreeLink and streaming audio capability are standard on all Civic models, but are only available on Mazda i Touring and above models.
  • • Civic’s front center console with sliding armrest is standard across the lineup, while Mazda’s is only available on the Grand Touring trims.
  • • All Civic models have the ACE II body structure. The Mazda has nothing like it.

2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid sets an efficiency standard

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

2014 honda accord plug-in hybridIn the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid, Honda sought to create a vehicle that has top-level efficiency. A new report would suggest the company was able to do just that.

Turns out, the plug-in hybrid is the first vehicle to meet the new SULEV20 emissions standards in California. The new standard is 1/3 cleaner than the previous standard and stricter than any other in the nation. The plug-in Accord not only meets SULEV20, which stands for “Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle 20,” standards, it also already meets the CAFE 2025 greenhouse gas emission standards.

This accomplishment is one in a long line of emissions standards pioneered by Honda. The 1996 Honda Civic was the first car to actually meet the Low Emission Vehicle standards when they were introduced. Not to be outdone, the 1998 Honda Accord then met the Super Low Emission Vehicle standards two years later. Following another two years, the 2000 Accord met the first Super Ultra Low-Emission Vehicle standards. The 2001 Civic natural gas and 2003 Civic Hybrid were also the first to meet standards in their respective segments.

Everyone at this Austin Honda dealer, from the techs to the sales guys, is excited to test drive and see how efficient the new plug-in Accord is. The new Accord plug-in hybrid has an EPA estimated mileage rating of 124 MPGe city and 105 MPGe highway while using the electric mode. The standard hybrid mode should get an EPA estimated mileage rating of 46MPG combined (city/highway).

Honda to debut brand new compact “Urban SUV Concept” at 2013 North American International Auto Show

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Honda didn’t include many more details about the compact SUV concept, but it did release a teaser sketch, which you can see below. We do know it’s a global concept model that integrates the sporty, dynamic SUV profile and a spacious, functional interior. Honda will broadcast the introduction of the new vehicle live during its NAIAS press conference at hondawebcast.com.

Two Honda models featured on Car and Driver’s ’10 Best’ list

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Given the quality we’ve seen in the 2013 lineup, Honda is in for a big year. Several 2013 models have already been recognized this month by different automotive sites, and now Car and Driver has included two 2013 Honda vehicles in its annual, highly respected, “10 Best” list.

For one week in September, C&D’s editors drove over 15k miles testing 2013 models (under $80k) to create the “10 Best” list. And the Honda models that made the cute are…

2013 Honda Accord – The Accord is appearing for the 27th time in the 31 year history of the list. This easily makes the Accord the most decorated member of the list ever. Recognized by C&D editors for its “playful and gracious spirit,” they highlighted how the new Accord “fully delivers on Honda’s “man-maximum, machine-minimum” philosophy.”

2013 Honda Fit – Also making a repeat appearance, the Fit has been featured for the 7th time in its 7-yearUS history. Basically, the Fit has made the list every year it’s been on sale in theUS. “There’s more intelligence packed into the Fit than in many cars twice its size,” comment C&D’s editors, adding that the “Fit’s every component huns the song of high-quality machinery.” They also recognized it for being “hugely practical and affordable.”

“The Accord and Fit both embody Honda’s core values of ingenious packaging, great visibility, fun driving dynamics and fuel efficiency,” said American Honda VP of Marketing Michael Accavitti.

This Austin Texas Honda dealer is excited to see the two cars make the list again (we never doubted them anyways). The quality with which Honda vehicles are made is reflected when the company receives all of these recognitions.
