Honda Smart Home

Honda Smart Home Rendering

While we were trying to be more eco-friendly by banning the use of plastic bags and buying hybrid cars, Honda was developing a project that will make our efforts seem like child’s play. The Honda Smart Home US concept home is at the vanguard of energy efficiency and environmental consciousness, and gives us a glimpse as to what the future might hold for homeowners.

This past week Honda announced the creation of the Honda Smart Home US (HSH) at the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction site on the campus of University of California, Davis, marking the beginning of the building process. The HSH is a “showcase for environmental innovation and renewable energy enabling technologies that demonstrates Honda’s vision for sustainable, zero-carbon living and personal mobility, including the use of solar power to charge a Honda Fit EV battery,” says a Honda press release.

This sustainable home will feature an array of technologies that will greatly reduce the energy consumed by individual households while fully providing for the needs of an electric vehicle. The home will also offer its occupants control over all the systems in the house, allowing residents to remotely and continually monitor and adjust all aspects of energy use in real time.

So how will the HSH achieve “zero net energy”?

1. A solar power system will be installed to provide the energy for the home and electric vehicle.

2. A Honda Energy Management System will actively manage energy use, allowing the home to maximize its energy efficiency while responding to the needs of the electrical grid. This will minimize the impacts of solar energy generation and electric vehicle charging on the utility grid.

3. UC Davis energy research centers will design efficient, cost effective solutions to major home energy loads like heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems.

4. The electric vehicle charging will be connected directly to the solar system to avoid the CO2 emitted by grid electricity production.

5. The home will feature passive design elements and novel material to further reduce the CO2 emissions from the production of building materials and the construction and operation of the home.

Honda expects the home to be completed by the end of 2013. You can follow the building process through the HSH website.

Although this is years away from being remotely available, I can’t wait to have this type of Honda in Austin!

Next Gen Civic Hybrid to Get New Two-Motor System

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Honda Civic Hybrid Austin TX

Toshihiro Mibe, managing officer in charge of powertrain development at Honda R&D Co., recently announced to Automotive News at an industry conference that the next-generation Honda Civic Hybrid will get a two-motor system.

As part of Honda’s overhaul of its powertrain lineup, the new two-motor system aims to vastly improve the hybrid’s fuel economy. In fact, Honda is thinking about two types of two-motor systems; one for the Accord Hybrid and one for the Civic.

The two-motor layout permits extensive electric-only driving, with one motor powering the wheels and the other recharging the batteries. The difference between the systems would be the battery capacity.

Mibe stated that the fuel economy delivered will be much better than that of the current generation, but he wasn’t able to provide figures. Currently, the Civic Hybrid uses a one-motor system that is 30 percent more efficient than the Integrated Motor Assist, motor found on non-hybrid Honda models.

Honda vehicles are very green according to ACEEE

Honda Insight Austin TX

Honda Insight

Have you heard of the ACEEE ranking system? Standing for American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the ACEEE every year recognizes and ranks the greenest cars in the market. For 2013, five Honda vehicles earned a “green” recognition. These include the Honda Fit EV, Insight, Civic Hybrid, Fit and Odyssey.

The Fit EV, Insight and Civic Hybrid made the list of ACEEE’s 12 most “greenest” vehicles, while the 2013 Honda Fit and Honda Odyssey were named as “greener choices of 2013.”

The ACEE ranking system uses many different factors when determining the green factor of a vehicle. Among them are the vehicle’s fuel economy, pollution impact, as well as global warming and upstream emissions. The result is a list that contains some of the best and most efficient cars on the market today.

Honda is very committed to the efficiency movement as can be seen from the new car lineup that it produces year after year. “Honda’s vision for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which is reflected in our environmental slogan of “Blue Skies for our Children,” inspires us to lead and innovate in every aspect of our operations, from our product engineering and manufacturing practices to our upstream sales and service activities,” said Steven Center of American Honda.

Sporting great fuel efficiency and a great overall ride, these Honda vehicles (expect for the Fit EV, boo!) can be found right here at your favorite Austin TX Honda dealership.

Automakers become more involved at Consumer Electronics Show

Friday, January 11th, 2013

automakers 2013 ces As cars get more technologically advanced, it’s natural that automakers make their presence known within the tech scene. Part of that is attending the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show this year. The C.E.S. as it’s known, is one of the premier electronics shows in the country and its going on right now in Las Vegas.

So what can you expect to see at the show from automakers? Well, it appears one of the big focuses this year is on electric vehicles and the pairing of them with home and public charging stations. This will no doubt be a big step in getting consumers familiar with the ways electric vehicles integrate into daily life. While we currently don’t carry the Honda Fit EV here at Howdy Honda, your Austin Honda dealer, we hope Honda expands the distribution of the Fit EV into Texas.

In addition to electric vehicles, the “connected car” will be on full display as well. It is expected that the smartphone-vehicle integration will play a big role in the innovations presented by automakers at the show. Apple might have some skin in the game too since last year they announced that its popular Siri voice recognition would be integrated into vehicle technology. Other items expected to make waves at the show include: 3D dash instrument cluster, in-car apps, vehicle safety and communication technology, and open-source software that will further vehicle entertainment system integration.

This is an exciting time to be involved in the automotive industry. If you want to see a very technologically advanced vehicle right here in Austin, you should check out the new 2013 Accord. Its innovative and advanced technology has been gaining national attention since its release back in September 2012.

Sneak Peek: 2014 Honda Accord hybrid

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will have some style changes.

With all the excitement surrounding the release of the 2013 Honda Accord, another announcement seemed to get lost in the shuffle: the hybrid edition of the 2014 Accord.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid

A look under the hood of the Accord Hybrid.

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will have a four-cylinder engine to go along with the electric powerplant under the hood and it will come in traditional hybrid as well as plug-in hybrid versions. The plug-in version of the new Accord is expected to be out in early 2013, while the conventional hybrid will keep us waiting until later in 2013. The numbers Honda is putting out have the plug-in hybrid getting better than 100 MPGe, which should put it in great position to compete with and even beat similar vehicles in the market.

In addition to the obvious changes under the hood, the hybrid versions of the 2013 Honda Accord will also undergo stylistic changes. The front grille will lead the changes, following by alloy wheels, and blue-tinted headlights. The inside of the Accord Hybrid will also change, with different gauges and meters that coincide with the hybrid system.

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is keeping us intrigued as the 2007 Accord Hybrid wasn’t in the market for long. Nonetheless, the all-new 2013 Accord is impressive so we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the 2014 Accord Hybrid.

New Retrofit Kit can turn any car into a hybrid

Hybrid Retrofit system

MTSU students have developed a way for every car to become a hybrid.

Hybrid vehicles are all the rage these days. While the hybrid system is generally available  on newer cars, students from the Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) have developed a way for nearly every car to be converted into a hybrid. The Plug-In Hybrid Retrofit Kit is estimated to cost approximately $3,000 if it were to be sold.

University Professor Charles Perry recently fitted the school’s technology to a 1995 Honda station wagon and showed off how the process works. Basically, an electric motor is added to the rear wheel of the car and linked to a battery system in the rear of the vehicle. The battery augments the actual engine drive system of the car to help the vehicle become much more efficient – improving fuel mileage 50-100%.

The system is designed for those that drive primarily in the city, as it does not provide the advantages at a high rate of speed. In city driving, though, the system can assist the vehicle greatly and provide outstanding fuel mileage. A big part of the system’s success is being fitted in unused space on the vehicle without interfering with the braking process.

For us, the hybrid process at MTSU shows the innovations that can be achieved in the vehicle industry, even by students. We’re not sure if the process will ever reach the mainstream, but we have some used Honda cars that we’d be interested to see it on.

Watch how the Plug-In Hybrid Retrofit Kit works:

Honda Fit EV is changing the electric car game

2013 Honda Fit EV

2013 Honda Fit EV

Honda’s dive into the electric car realm is coming in the form of the 2013 Honda Fit EV. While it is based on the Honda Fit that is currently out there, it has its own unique qualities – in addition to the fact that it runs entirely on electricity. Obviously the Fit EV has a lot going for it, as it was recently named the most efficient vehicle on the market.

As far as design, the Fit EV looks very similar to the Honda Fit that we know and love, but it has gained some aerodynamic advantages. The new fascia diverts air more effectively, allowing the Fit EV to have less drag. It also brings more air into the engine, which keeps the electric motor cool.

The actual driving experience will be all new to Honda drivers. Under the hood is a 20kWh lithium-ion battery and 92 kilowatt electric motor. The result is 123 horsepower that is good enough for a top speed of 90 mph. A three-mode driving system allows drivers to select between Sport,Normaland Econ modes. Sport mode provides the most power to your ride, Econ mode saves the most energy and extends battery life andNormalmixes in the two for a comfortable driving experience. Obviously, range will depend on which mode you choose, with the optimal range coming from Econ.

By providing top-of-the-line efficiency, the 2013 Honda Fit EV is changing the electric car game.

Design students develop tires of the future

Tires of the future

University of Cincinnati School of Design students that designed the tires of the future.

When you think about it, tires really haven’t changed all that drastically through the years. But some design students at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design are looking to change that. A class project has resulted in some serious possibilities for the future of car tires. The designs are so impressive that sponsor Hankook is keeping them under wraps until patents come through and it can show them off at 2012 SEMA in October.

“The students were asked to – and all did – change almost every aspect of the tire as well as propose concepts that more closely integrated the tire and rim,” said Professor Raphael Zammit.

To show just how innovative the new designs were, consider the winner. The entry, Tiltred, by Ben Zavala, uses three tires and rims where a single wheel would normally be. While we don’t know too many details, it is said to allow for greater road contact. With three tires instead of one, we can believe that is the case.

The second-place entry features a mechanized tire that would change for specific road conditions. The third-place entry is a replaceable tread that can be put on a tire. This would allow for the tread to be changed without disposing of a whole tire.

While there’s no way of knowing if these designs will reach production cars, they sure will be intriguing to see when 2012 SEMA rolls around.

Honda FCX Clarity as an electricty generator?

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Honda FCX Clarity | Howdy Honda Blog | Austin TX

What if our future cars could serve as backup generators for our home? It would actually be amazing if something like that was available right now as millions of people have suffered from days-long power outages in the East coast. Well, that reality is closer than you think because in a pilot program currently developed for Japan, Honda turned its FCX Clarity into a zero emission electric generator on wheels.

In the newest modified version of Honda’s fuel-cell electric vehicle, the automaker added a mobile box of power outlets near the back tire that lets the car function as a 9kW generator. On a full-tank of hydrogen, the 9 kilowatts generated enables the FCX Clarity to provide continuous electricity for more than seven hours.

As part of the program, Honda also built a new solar-powered hydrogen fueling station. The station uses water and solar panels to produce the hydrogen. In 24 hours, it can generate enough hydrogen to power the FCX Clarity for 90 miles. Because the station doesn’t use a mechanical compressor, the system is almost completely silent and highly energy efficient.

The system is being tested right now as an emergency power supply in areas that have been suffering constant power outages due to the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. As it stands right now, it seems like the system would work in emergency situations or to offset electric costs during peak use times (something we know too well in Austin).

Cell phones and gas stations: A fatal attraction?

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

cell phone and gas stations | Howdy Honda BlogLet’s travel back a decade or so when “forward emails” were popular. We all received them; from the one that warns that if you don’t forward the email to at least 10 friends in the next 60 seconds some horrible person is going to knock on your door and kill you, to the less threatening but equally terrifying one about the man who used his cell phone while pumping gas and everything exploded. Don’t you just miss those emails? Well, today I am here to debunk this last piece of gem: is it really dangerous to use a cell phone while pumping gas?

Short answer: NO!

History: The whole debacle started around 1999-2002 with an email claiming to be from Shell Oil that warned readers about the dangers of using a cell phone while at a gas station. The email recounted a few cases of men bursting into flames because they picked up their mobile phone when pumping gas. Want to know something interesting? No media news outlet ever reported of these incidents. Want to know something even more interesting? Shell Oil released a statement denying their involvement in such email. Interesting.

So how did this misconception spread? Well, besides the fact that we all love a good urban legend, people would rather be safe than make the evening news so gas stations did their part to place signs and perpetuated the myth. However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), and The American Petroleum Institute have all stated that there is absolutely no evidence that mobile phones cause explosions or accidents at gas stations. Even after initial reports place blame on cell phone use for fires at gas stations, subsequent investigations always conclude that the initial reports were erroneous. In fact, even the masters of myth-debunking, Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters, have proven this myth to be false.

So there you have it, you can be at ease when pumping gas because your phone will not act as a portable bomb. Now static electricity is another story…
