Things Not To Forget Before Walking Down the Aisle
To the many brides and grooms preparing to walk down the aisle in the upcoming summer months: Congratulations! As a Honda dealership in Central Texas, we want to make sure that all newlyweds take care of all the car-related details that come with being married, especially if you are taking your spouse’s last name.
After the honeymoon is over and you’ve sent all the ‘Thank You’ notes, addressing those car concerns is very important. The most important items you will need to update are: social security card, driver’s license, title & registration, and insurance.
1. Social Security Card – I place this first because you will need it to change your driver’s license.
2. Driver’s License – This is the most important document that you have to update. In Texas, you have 30 days after your name change to change your name on your driver’s license. There’s an $11 fee and you will have to show you marriage certificate (or proof of name change) as well as the social security card. Go to http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/driverlicense/changes.htm to find more information.
3. Title & Registration – In Texas, when you change the name on your vehicle’s title, the registration updates the name automatically. To change your car’s title go to the county tax office with your marriage certificate, updated social security and $28 to pay the fee. You can visit http://www.txdmv.gov for more information.
4. Insurance – If you are adding a spouse to your vehicle’s registration, you may have to present an insurance card that reflects the new name. One of the major pluses about getting married is that married couples can save money combining their car insurance. Many times insurance companies offer a marriage discount or multiple-car discount. However, if your spouse has a history of tickets, car accidents, or bad credit this may not be the best move as your overall cost could actually increase.
Once that is all sorted out, the only thing left is a new Honda to ride off into the sunset in.
