BookSpring

We like to involve ourselves with organizations that want to make a difference right here in Austin and in Texas. As part of that, we are very proud to support and sponsor BookSpring, a non-profit organization dedicated to provide “books, reading experiences and tools to children and their families so they can develop a desire to read and succeed in school.”

A few years ago, our General Manager, Cliff Collier, saw the great work put forth by BookSpring and recognized the need to provide literacy programs to children early on in their development and ensure their success in the future. Mr. Collier states, “When people can’t read, they are not free; they will always depend on someone else. That is why our support of BookSpring is so important. I believe that providing reading resources to children and encouraging them to read in school and at home is essential to their overall success.”

BookSpring passionately drives early literacy development and equips children, as well as their families and communities, with a solid reading foundation that will help them in their long-term achievements. The organization does this through different programs that “create a continuum of literacy development.” The programs are:

Read-a-Thon: Event where students from local elementary schools pledge to read a certain number of book pages in a two-week period.

Reach Out and Read: This program leverages the parents and medical providers to ensure that literacy skills are developed and becomes part of the child’s routine check up from the time that they are 6 months old until five years of age.

Reading is FUNdamental (RIF): RIF provides exciting, literacy-related events at AISD campuses, local Head Start centers, and other child development centers to give children the opportunity to select and keep a “forever book” at no cost.

BookClub: The BookClubs are designed for parents to add value to the RIF program. Parents are given instruction and practice on how to read-aloud to their young child and are equipped with tools to help their child extend the interest and understanding of each book.  

Rebook: Books that are collected during book drives are then rebooked and distributed to children at medical clinic for low income families, community outreach events, children’s shelters, faith based organizations and libraries in economically disadvantaged areas.
