Honda recently announced plans of producing a fuel-cell vehicle that would go on sale in the United States in 2015.
“This new fuel-cell vehicle will showcase further technological advancement and significant cost reduction that Honda has accomplished,” said Honda President and CEO Takanobu Ito.
If you are unfamiliar with fuel-cell technology in vehicles, they basically covert fuel (natural gas or hydrogen) into electricity. We have a pretty neat infographic that displays how fuel-cell vehicles work. Honda’s fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX Clarity, is three times more fuel efficient than its gas-powered counterpart.
The prospect of Honda hitting the market by 2015 with a full-scale release of fuel-cell vehicles is very reachable since it has produced the FCX Clarity on a limited-release basis for a decade. Although fewer than 100 have been sold, Honda has been able to improve and learn what works and what doesn’t.
The main challenge Honda faces with the release is the lack of infrastructure to support fuel-cell vehicles. We’ll see how the development continues as 2015 is less than three years away.
