Texas Hill Country Road Trip | Howdy Honda Blog

From: National Geographic Adventures

Although summer solstice is about a month away, summer inAustin (and Texas, in general) has arrived with full force. In that spirit, we put together road trip through Central Texas so you can pack your family in the Honda and head out for a remarkable road trip vacation.

Day 1: Head down IH35 from Austin to Gruene for a day-long fly-fishing trip and end the day at the oldest dance hall in Texas, Gruene Hall.

Day 2: Head southwest to Bandera for some cowboy adventures. There are a few places to go horseback riding and roam the limestone peaks of Hill Country State Natural Area.

Day 3: Head north to Fredericksburg through Route 16. If you are up to the challenge, bike the 45-mile loop from Fredericksburg to Doss through cattle ranches and farmland. If something more low key is your style, Fredericksburg is a beautiful German town with little shops and even a Bier garden.

Day 4: Continue going north to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for some rock climbing and/or hiking. After you’ve worked up an appetite in the park, head to Llano to chow down on some good old-fashioned BBQ.

After that you’re probably ready to head back home to Austin. At the end of the trip, you will have driven about 285 miles through the Texas Hill Country and created lots of wonderful memories. Nonetheless, before leaving on any road trip, remember to stop by our Honda Service Center in Austin to have your Honda looked at and make sure that it is in top condition for a long drive.

Holiday Driving

Austin car dealership driving tipsUsually the holidays take you outside your normal driving zone; if you live in the city, you might have to drive to a rural area or vice versa. Therefore, I thought I would collect some tips from my fellow coworkers at this car dealership in Austin so you can be prepared driving on either a rural road or a city street.

I would assume that most of you live in Central Texas – in or around the Austin area, where city driving dominates within the Austin city limits but quickly turns rural once you go a few miles outside. If you are not used to driving in the traffic mayhem of Austin, here are a few tips that you should follow to make sure you reach your destination safely and timely in this urban setting:

  1. Check to see if construction is occurring on your route. If you have to be at a holiday party at a certain time, you might want to leave earlier than usual.
  2. Drive economically. What I mean is don’t speed up when you know you’ll have to slow down, and don’t hesitate to switch to neutral instead of smashing the brake.
  3. Drive in one lane. Although switching lanes may seem to save you some time, it more than doubles your chance of getting into an accident.
  4. Don’t take anything personal. If someone cuts you off or is merging into traffic let it go, no sense in doing something that will endanger yourself and others around you.

Now, a lot of us find ourselves traveling outside of the city over holiday weekends. If you are not used to driving on rural roads and only venture out to the Hill Country during the holidays, follow these steps and be aware of rural driving safety:

  1. Keep your eyes peeled for roadside hazards like ditches and shoulders.
  2. Be cautious of farm equipment as well as other slow moving vehicles.
  3. Don’t speed just because no one else is around! Rural roads often feature sharp turns, rolling hills and poor visibility that sneak up on you when you least expect it.
  4. Watch out for animals on the road.

Do you know how to change a tire?

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Howdy Honda Enriches Customers How to Change a TireA flat-tire is inconvinient and the opposite of fun, but with the proper training this can be quite an easy task. Just follow these tips and tricks, and your tire changing woes will be a thing of the past.

First things first, when you know you have a flat tire pull-over to the side of the road safely, than put your emergency flashers on.  Before you even start doing anything you will need a car jack, tire iron and obviously your spare tire.  If you’re spare tire is flat as well, you are out of luck and should call the Howdy Honda; otherwise check the tire pressure and make sure you are good to go. Make sure your car is either in “park” if automatic, or gear if manual.

Once all that is in place get your tire iron ready and start loosening each lug nut by turning the tire iron counter-clockwise.  Now that they’re loose you don’t want to remove them quite yet, you actually want to put the car jack underneath your car, in the proper jacking points noted in your owner’s manual, and raise up the vehicle until the flat tire is off of the ground.

When you have the tire off the ground remove the lug nuts fully, followed by removal of the tire itself, make sure you keep the lug nuts handy. After that is done, bring the spare tire over and line it up with the wheel studs. Once you get the spare tire on the wheel studs just simply twist the lugs back on until you can’t and then use the tire iron to tighten them up. When that is all good to go, you essentially just need to lower the car jack and tighten up the lug nuts as much as you can.

You are now offically a master tire changer, congratulations.

However, if your tire-changing skills need some polishing and still feel a bit uncomfortable with the title “master,” give a call to one of our Honda Service Advisors at 512-443-4300, they can help you with any repair needed on your Honda.

5 Teen Driving Myths Busted

Teen driving myths Howdy Honda Austin, TXTruth about teen drivers

For a teen, turning 16-years-old and obtaining that adult responsibility to drive can be one of the best moments in their life. For that teen’s parent, it can be the beginning of endless worry and fear. Many people, new drivers included, have a false persona of what a teen driver is like. Howdy Honda, one of the leading Honda dealers in Austin, wants to share some settling news (for parents and teens).

Myth #1: Teens are thrill-seekers and crash often.

Parents often believe teens will crash and crash often due to deliberate dangerous driving. This just isn’t true. The real reason behind most crashes is simply inexperience, which can’t be fixed over night. Teens should always drive attentively and without distractions, such as a cell phone. Over 40 percent of teen crashes were related to the driver being distracted.

Myth #2: It’s okay for teens to drive while texting.

Every parent wants updates when a teen is driving to a certain destination, but those updates definitely need to be made while the teen isn’t driving. Any second eyes are not on the road decreases a driver’s and passenger’s safety.

Myth #3 Parents don’t influence how a teen will drive.

Parents actually hold a lot of influencing power over their teen drivers, even if they think they don’t. When parents display proper driving habits, their teens will too.

Myth #4 Teens can drive at night, no problem.

Just because teens have younger eyes than their parents doesn’t mean they’re better suited for driving at night. The combination of night and unfamiliar roads is never a good combination.

Myth #5 Honor roll students equal honor roll-like driving.

Students who do their homework in a timely fashion and bring home the best report cards do not necessarily turn out to be better drivers. Driving isn’t just about knowing the rules, it’s about using hand-eye coordination, motor and cognitive skills.
