What you ought to know about replacing your Honda’s tires

Sunday, January 6th, 2013

honda tires austin txRarely will an accident require you to replace all four tires. Usually, only one or two tires will have to be replaced, if any at all.

When you have to replace a tire, especially when you’re not going to be replacing the full set, you have to make sure you are getting the exact replacement in order to ensure your vehicle handles properly. This means that you no only have to get the same manufacturer, size, and model, but most importantly, the same vehicle manufacturer’s part number. Using any new or used tire will cause a miss-match that will result in less than optimal performance.

Honda works very closely with several tire manufacturers to produce an original equipment (OE) tire that optimizes the handling characteristics of your specific Honda. To do this, OE tires are engineered differently with stiffer casing, reinforced sidewall and tread design tuned for better handling.  OE Honda tires are specifically designed for noise reduction, optimal handling, fuel economy, weather adaptability, and tire life.

Howdy Honda is equipped to provide you with the proper replacement tires for your Honda in Austin TX, or the proper information for you to secure the correct tire.

Tires: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Tires for Hondas in Austin TXWe all know that there are many integral parts to the automobile: engine, transmission, brakes, etc. The one part that is commonly overlooked? Your tires. Think about it, whether you’re driving to the grocery store, work, or going on a road trip you’re always on your tires. Well, duh! What’s your point? My point is simple; by regularly maintaining your vehicle’s tires you will increase your and your passengers’ safety, AND keep your fuel economy at optimal levels. While thinking about tire maintenance, there are several different things to check and/or look at:

1. Tire Pressure

Tire pressure is really important because it prevents accidents due to under-inflated tires. Use a tire-pressure gauge, under $5.00 at a local hardware store, and make sure that the PSI (pressure per square inch) is at the optimal level for each tire. Look inside the driver’s door for the precise air pressure level for your tires.

2. Tread

Another big thing to keep your eyes on is your tire’s tread. This is important because balding tires lose traction that is vital in Mother Nature’s elements. On top of that, bald tires are more susceptible to bursting while on the road. (Not something you want to be a part of.)

3. Weight limit & Irregularities

Lastly, you need to know your tire’s weight limitations because carrying extra weight on your tires can jeopardize your safety and fuel economy. Also, keep tabs on your tires by picking up on any gouges, cuts or slashes that may be there so you can quickly get them repaired.

If you suspect your vehicle may have faulty tires, or you need new ones, Howdy Honda has a shop full of tires for Hondas. Did you know that Honda designs tires that are specific for Honda cars? Learn something new every day.

And for those of you that like to know everything about everything, here’s a fun infographic  about car tire facts:

Is your car prepared to deal with the winter elements?

Honda Service Center Austin
Prepare your vehicle for winter conditions

If it snows once a year in Austin, it’s a milestone; but let’s not forget that apparently we’re going to have to deal with hard freezes continuously from now until, my guess is, at least late February. As the leading Honda Service Center in Austin, we know that preparing your car for winter isn’t something that people here normally talk about (or do). However, if you’re planning to go northbound for the holidays or get in your car before 9am, you should check these 6 areas of your car because they’ll be tested by the elements.

1. Tires – (This applies mostlty if you’re driving to a snow-friendly state or area.) One of the more important things when driving in snow and the cold are your tires. If you are traveling to an area with a lot of snow, you should look into potentially purchasing snow tires. Winter tires are a good buy because they are made for driving on snow and ice, giving drivers more traction.

2. Tire Pressure – If winter tires don’t fit your budget make sure to maintain your tire pressure (very important in Austin). We wrote a blog about the importance of proper tire pressure when fall started, so give it a read. Proper tire pressure allows the best possible contact between your tires and the road.

3. 4WD – If your vehicle has 4-wheel-drive make sure it works properly. Engage your 4WD and make sure it disengages properly, and that it doesn’t make odd noises. If something doesn’t sound right, come by the Service Department to get it checked as it makes winter driving a lot easier.

4. Oil – The thickness of the oil needs to be fairly low so that it circulates well in an engine given that oil gets thick in cold temperatures. This is especially important in older car models since modern ones normally come with oil that’s thin enough to make it through winter.

5. Belts and Hoses – Belts and hoses should be inspected as the colder temperatures have a history of shortening the life of both of them.

6. Antifreeze – Lastly, one of the most important fluids is antifreeze, or coolant. For the best performance, there should be a 50/50 combination between antifreeze and water inside your car’s radiator. Antifreeze keeps your vehicles fluids from freezing, hence the name anti-freeze.

These are a few steps you can take to help prepare your vehicle for winter conditions. Although some people say we luck out being in Austin, it hasn’t been the case so far with the freezing temperatures and if you know someone traveling north during the next couple of months pay this post forward as it can give peace of mind to drivers with little experience driving in the winter elements.
