Honda looks to increase safety on the roads by studying driver behavior

Honda studies distracted driving

Distracted driving has reached an unhealthy level in the United States. Whether it is from talking on the phone, texting, or other reasons, studies have found that distracted driving has led to a large number of accidents in the past several years. Honda just announced a partnership with Ohio State University to develop a Driving Simulator Laboratory. The purpose of the partnership is to support advanced research into distracted driving issues and driver behavior that affects safety on the roads.

The laboratory will be delving deep into driver behavior by monitoring a number of variables. Biometric sensors will measure factors like heart rate, eye movement, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, respiration, heart and blink rates, among others. These will allow experts to better understand what is actually going on with a person’s overall body and state of mind while driving.

“This is something of a different approach to understanding, at a deeper level, the driver’s state and how people interact with the vehicle,” said Honda R&D Americas Chief Engineer Steven Feit.

This study goes beyond previous efforts in the field by looking at the psychological and cognitive aspects of what a driver is going through while actually driving. The hope is that this will one day be able to lead to more attentive drivers and ultimately less accidents being attributed to distracted driving.

Nine 2012 Honda models earn Top Safety Picks

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Honda Top Safety Rating

On December 15, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) revealed its list of winners for their high-ranking Top Safety Pick award. Howdy Honda is proud to announce that nine new 2012 Honda models received such prestigious accolades.

IIHS’ Top Safety Pick award recognizes those cars that perform the best in protecting passengers that are involved in front, side, rear and rollover crashes. The Institute’s tests and ratings help shoppers make better decisions and evaluate vehicles that offer best-in-class crash protection.

The IIHS awarded the 2012 Civic and Odyssey earlier this year with a Top Safety Pick award; now the IIHS has come out with the complete list of 2012 model winners. In addition to the Civic and Odyssey, Honda earned the accolade for the 2012 Fit, CR-Z, CR-V, Insight, Accord, Pilot and Ridgeline. This demonstrates Honda’s commitment in designing strong safety features in their cars.

Honda Sets Top-Priority on Fuel Efficiency

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

honda fuel efficiency austinAs the leading Honda dealer in Austin (one of the greenest cities in the U.S.), we are excited about the direction our manufacturer is going in. With the recent statement made by Honda Motor Company’s CEO, Takanobu Ito, it is no longer a surprise that Honda is going after fuel efficiency supremacy. Ito stated that Honda will consist of, “the No. 1 fuel economy in each [vehicle] category within the next three years.”

Some may call this a bold statement, but Ito just unveiled to the public several redesigned four & six-cylinder engines as well as a new family of CVT transmissions. Needless to say Honda is on their way to back up the claim.

Consumers can expect these efficient engines to be infused in Honda vehicles starting at some point next year. All of the new efficiency technology is expected to be released by the end of 2013, making this efficiency push a pretty big overhaul.

One of Honda’s Chief Engineers inside Research & Development, Keiji Ohtsu, stated that, “some vehicles now on the market could receive the new engines mid-cycle, before the vehicles receive full redesigns.” This doesn’t mean that all Honda vehicles will get an efficiency boost mid-cycle, as some will just go into their redesign grinding out with their standard engine saving Honda some bucks at the end of the day.

With more and more Americans flocking toward efficiency Honda could make a real strong push to the top of the market. American Honda Motor’s President, Tetsuo Iwamura, stated that, “We(Honda) could be first in the marketplace” for fuel economy.

Honda Tops for Customer Loyalty

2011 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot for 2011.

For the last eight years, J.D. Power and Associates has ranked customer loyalty among automobile manufacturers. This year, their survey showed that both Honda and Ford tied at the top of the chart for customer loyalty.

Among the 62 percent of Honda’s customers that are loyal to the brand, many are buying the Accord sedan, CR-V crossover and Pilot SUV. It’s no wonder, these and many other Honda vehicles score high marks among reviewers. For example:

Ever since the very first Accord was introduced in 1976, quality Honda engineering has made it one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. This high level of craftsmanship results in a high residual value as well. In fact, the 2010 Accord was honored with the “Best Residual Value Award for the Midsize Segment” from ALG and the “Best Resale Value Award” for the Midsize Segment from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. We take great pride knowing that the Accord is such an excellent value today, and will be for years to come. — Honda.com

These days, small crossovers are all the rage, offering the tall ride height and cargo carrying ability of a mid-size SUV, plus ample ground clearance and the sure-footed traction of all-wheel-drive. Yet, while many of its competitors have grown larger and thirstier, the CR-V remains true to its roots, which may explain why it continues to top the compact CUV sales chart year after year. — Kelly Blue Book

“The Honda Pilot excels at providing the capabilities that people desire most from a family-oriented SUV,” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of Product Planning for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Pilot emphasizes safety, versatile cargo areas and comfortable space for adults and children, while also providing a smart balance between all-weather capabilities, refined driving dynamics and overall fuel efficiency.” — Honda.com

There is no better time to stop in at Howdy Honda and test drive one of these best-selling vehicles. Take advantage of the great deals going on now to become the owner of one of Honda’s line of quality cars and trucks.

Honda Odyssey Named Best Redesigned Vehicle

2011 Honda Odyssey

2011 Honda Odyssey - Named Best Redesigned Vehicle by Kelly Blue Book

For several years the Honda Odyssey has been the class leading minivan, distinguished among its peers by its style, performance, utility and legendary Honda reliability. Now, for 2011, Odyssey has been redesigned and it’s better than ever, according to Kelly Blue Book (KBB).

Writing about the previous incarnation of the Odyssey, KBB’s editors wrote: “We don’t have to tell you how good the outgoing edition of the Honda Odyssey is. It captured numerous honors including a victory in our most recent minivan comparison test.”

Despite producing an already compelling vehicle in the form of the previous Odyssey, KBB found that the new 2011 model was substantially improved.

“[T]he completely redesigned 2011 version of the Odyssey improves on its predecessor in almost every way imaginable,” said KBB in announcing that the 2011 Odyssey had been named KBB’s “Best Redesigned Vehicle. “It offers a better-looking, more contemporary exterior design, a sumptuous interior stuffed with innovative features and class-leading fuel economy.”

KBB also noted that the new Odyssey features great safety, refinement, resale value and reliability.

The 2011 Odyssey is worth closer look, particularly for those needing a comfortable, safe vehicle for transporting kids, groceries, and more in comfort. Howdy Honda, the friendly Honda dealer in Austin, Texas, features an array of new Odyssey minivans for review. Honda CR-V Tops When it Comes to Retaining Value

2011 Honda CR-V

Honda CR-V is tops at retaining value, according to Kelley Blue Book

Looking for the best retail value in a small SUV? Then look no further than the 2011 Honda CR-V.

Kelley Blue Book (KBB), long the leader in helping buyers determine which cars retain their value the best, has declared that the CR-V has the best retail value. Not only does the CR-V boast the best resale value in its own class of small SUVs, but it dominates the market by this measure. According to USA Today’s “Drive On” blog, Honda CR-V is “the very best.” The blog goes on to describe CR-V as “a small crossover SUV that’s the best-selling SUV of any size or type in the USA.

According to KBB findings, Honda CR-V owners can expect their SUVs to be worth 46.8 percent of the original purchase price after 5 years. That compares favorably with the average for all cars, which hovers at just 34 percent. Next best after the CR-V comes the upscale BMW X5 XDrive35d. That mouthfull retains 46 percent of its value after 5 years.

The CR-V may be best of the bunch, but other Honda cars had strong showings in the KBB rankings. The Honda Fit leads the Subcompact car class and the Honda Accord takes top place among mid-size cars.

Howdy Honda in Austin, Texas offers the full line these and all quality Honda cars and trucks. For more information visit one of our professional Honda Sales Associates today.

Honda Ties For The Top In JD Power Survey

Saturday, December 11th, 2010
2011 Honda Accord

The 2011 Accord, one of America's favorite cars.

What’s the best way to find out if a particular car manufacturer’s vehicles are better than others? How about checking to see which brand car buyers purchase over and over again, after owning previous cars from the same company?

By that standard, Honda is the way to go. According to J.D. Power and Associates recent findings in their annual customer retention survey, Honda owners are more likely than other car owners to purchase another new Honda vehicle. Only Ford, which tied with Honda in the survey, had the same level of owner loyalty.

What makes Honda vehicles so desirable? According to the J.D. Power findings, “Honda owners … site resale value and safety as reason for repurchasing the brand.”

Three Honda vehicles, in particular, were singled out by buyers as extremely desirable. Honda’s owner retention “is driven by Accord, CR-V and Pilot,” J.D. Power reported.

These results don’t surprise us here at Howdy Honda. Consider the Honda Accord, perennially one of America’s favorite sedans. It’s so good for 2011 that US News and World Report says it “ranks 6 out of 21 Affordable Midsize Cars.” That finding, the magazine says “is based on our analysis of 46 published reviews and test drives of the Honda Accord, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.”

US News also points out of the Accord, that “it has been named one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best and astonishing 24 times.”

Honda, the name stands for quality and value, and as JD Power points out, drivers have voted with their wallets and ranked Honda the best.
