Why the 2013 Honda Accord is better than its 2013 midsize competitors

2013 Honda Accord austint txWith performance, economy, quality, comfort, style, value and safety, the new 2013 Honda Accord is nothing less than the benchmark of its class. Even with the high number of standard and available features the Honda has, the midsize segment is still a competitive arena. Fortunately, however, most of you who cross-shop and test drive the competitors will quickly see the unique and powerful overall ownership proposition that the new Accord represents. Here’s how the 2013 Accord measures up to the competition:

2013 Honda Accord versus 2012 Toyota Camry

All-new for the 2012 model year, the top-selling midsize Toyota Camry enters the 2013 model year with good momentum. However, a close examination of the new Accord and the Camry shows distinct advantages for the Accord:

  • - More powerful: the Accord 4-cylinderand V6 engines have more power and torque.
  • - More transmission choices: the Accord comes with a choice of 6-speed Manual Transmission, 6-speed Automatic Transmission or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), while the Camry is only available with 6-speed automatic transmission.
  • - Critical safety features unavailable in the Camry: Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
  • - Better fuel economy: the 4-cylinder CVT Accord gets a better EPA city fuel-economy rating than the 4-cylinder Camry (27mpg vs. 25mpg) and a better combined fuel economy rating (30mpg vs 28mpg). The Accord V6 AT gets an EPA highway fuel-economy rating of 34mpg, while the Camry V6 rating is at 30mpg.

2013 Honda Accord versus 2013 Nissan Altima

Nissan’s entry in the midsize sedan category gets a dramatic redesign for 2013. By Nissan’s own admission, its windswept styling takes some cues from the Hyundai Sonata in its pursuit of Toyota Camry customers.

  • - More Powerful: the Accord 4-cylinder and V6 engines have more power; and the V6 engine has Variable Cylinder Management (VCM).
  • - More space: the Accord is significantly wider than the Altima for improved interior spaciousness.
  • - More transmission choices: the Accord comes with a choice of Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), 6-speed Manual Transmission, or 6-speed Automatic Transmission while the Altima is only available with CVT.
  • - Better fuel economy: the Accord V6 gets a better EPA highway fuel-economy rating that the Altima V6 (34mpg vs. 31mpg).
  •  - Features unavailable on the Altima: Active Sound Control and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) are standard on the Accord.

2013 Honda Accord versus 2013 Hyundai Sonata

The redesigned Sonata made its debut for the 2011 model year. For 2013, it maintains the styling, giving it a decidedly upscale appearance. Visually, at least, the Sonata is a strong competitor for the Accord, but the Hyundai doesn’t match the refinement of the Accord in either driving character or attention to detail:

  • - Critical safety features unavailable on the Sonata: Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
  • - Features unavailable on the Sonata: Active Sound Control (ASC) and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) are standard on the Accord.
  • - Better fuel economy: the 4-cylinder CVT Accord gets a better EPA city fuel-economy rating that the 4-cylinder 2.4liter Sonata (27mpg vs. 24mpg) and better combined fuel-economy rating (30mpg vs. 28mpg).
  • - Hyundai offers no V6 engine on the Sonata to match the Accord V6.
  • - The Accord has an available fuel-efficient CVT, but the Sonata does not.

2013 Honda Accord versus 2013 Kia Optima

The Kia Optima is a close cousin to the Hyundai Sonata. The car’s styling and content has been well received by the media. However, the Optima has a long way to go to present the long-term value the Honda Accord offers. And while evaluating finer details, Edmunds.com recognized the Optima “can be tight on headroom” and has “numb steering.”

  • - More powerful: the Accord 4-cylinder has more power that the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder Optima.
  • - More space: the Accord is wider than the Optima for improved interior spaciousness..
  • - Critical safety features unavailable on the Optima: Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
  • - Features unavailable on the Optima: Active Sound Control (ASC) and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) are standard on the Accord.
  • - Better fuel-economy: the 4-cylinder CVT Accord (LX, EX and EX-L) gets a better EPA city fuel-economy rating that the 4-cylinder 2.4-liter Optima (27mpg vs. 24mpg) and better highway fuel-economy rating (36mpg vs. 35mpg).
  • - Kia offers no V6 engine on the Optima to match the Accord V6.
  • - The Accord has an available fuel-efficient CVT, but the Optima does not.

2013 Honda Accord versus 2013 Ford Fusion

Ford’s midsize sedan is totally revised for the 2013, making it a more formidable competitor. Fortunately, the Accord continues to compare exceptionally well:

  • - Affordable CVT: a fuel-efficient CVT is available on all 4-cylinder Accord models, but Ford only makes a CVT available on the higher-priced Fusion SE Hybrid.
  • - Features unavailable on the Fusion: Smart Entry system
  • - Standard features: dual-zone climate control is standard on the Accord, but optional on the Fusion.
  • - The Accord V6 engine has Variable Cylinder Management (VCM).
