2011 Honda Accord Gets Visual, Equipment Updates
Four years after it went on sale as a 2008 model, the Honda Accord is receiving its scheduled refresh. Car and Driver says tweaks for 2011 include sharpening the front fascia design, new wheels, and updated rear lighting for both sedan and coupe. The grille is wider with less chrome, and rests above a restyled bumper with deeper fog-lights. Sedan models also have a new trunklid with lighting strips adjacent to the license-plate holder. A new SE sedan will also debut, filling the gap between the LX-P and EX four-cylinder trims. An entry-level Accord with a 177-hp four cylinder is now available with heated leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. “More-refined” accents, according to Honda, include a redesigned instrument panel and repositioned climate-control buttons. EX sedans and coupes have USB audio input and sedans with navigation have a backup camera. Click here for Car and Driver’s photo gallery of the updated 2011 Accord. Honda says four-cylinder engines equipped with the five-speed automatic transmission return 23 mpg city/34 mpg highway, bumps of 2 and 3 mpg respectively. The automatic-only V-6 sedan now sits at 19/30. Click here for more from Honda on its plans for the 2011 Accord.

Camry, Accord Top List of ‘Most American’ Cars
Cars.com's American-Made Index rates vehicles built and bought in the U.S. Factors include sales, where the car's parts come from, and whether the car is assembled in the U.S. Additionally, Cars.com disqualifies models with a domestic parts content rating below 75 percent, models built exclusively outside the U.S., or models soon to be discontinued without a U.S.-built successor. Overall, the American-Made Index recognizes cars that are built here, have a high amount of domestic parts, and are bought in large numbers by American consumers. Click here to view the list at Cars.com. For the second year, the Toyota Camry – which dethroned the Ford F-150 pickup on last year’s index – topped the list. But the No. 2 model, Honda's strong-selling Accord, surged unexpectedly. With all Accords sold in the U.S. now assembled in either Ohio or Alabama, the car’s 75 percent domestic content and strong sales came close to unseating Toyota for first place. The Accord is only the most noticeable changing of the guard. Half the models in last year's AMI didn't make it back, including the venerable F-150.

Survey: Honda perceived to be tops in customer, quality commitment - May 19, 2010
Among seven major auto brands, consumers consider Honda to be the most committed to customers and to product quality. Ford ranked second, followed by Nissan, Chevrolet, and Toyota, based on a new survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. Hyundai and Chrysler trailed the others by a significant margin.
To see how consumers' perception of a brand's commitment to customers and quality has changed in the wake of Toyota's high-profile safety and image challenges, the Consumer Reports National Research Center conducted a telephone survey using a nationally representative sample. More than 1,700 interviews were completed among adults whose household owns at least one vehicle.

Honda Sees Strong Year Ahead as Market Recovers - April 28, 2010
Honda Motor Co. reported a $774.7 million fiscal fourth-quarter net profit and predicted a 27 percent jump in bottom-line results for the current fiscal year, as Japan's No. 2 auto maker counts on significant growth in North America and elsewhere. The Wall Street Journal reports that the car maker's bullish forecast underlines the fact that it is making swift progress in moving back to a growth track following an industrywide slump after the financial crisis. Honda is targeting growth in the U.S., its largest market. The company Wednesday predicted a 14 percent rise in North American sales this fiscal year ending in March to 1.48 million vehicles, outpacing a projected 8.9 percent rise world-wide. Honda said it swung back to profitability in the fiscal fourth quarter as it boosted sales of hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles and other fuel-efficient cars. It was Honda's fourth straight quarter of net profit, after plunging into its first quarterly net loss in at least 15 years in the three months ended March 2009. Honda became the latest major car maker to report a return to profitability following Ford and Daimler AG. Domestic competitors Mazda and Mitsubishi said Tuesday they turned profitable in the quarter ended in March.

Review: Special Edition Honda Element Caters to Dog Lovers
Scott Burgess at The Detroit News, writes that the Honda Element is a quirky vehicle that he’s always liked. And like a well-bred dog, the Element improves with every generation. For the 2010 model, Honda has begun offering a $995 accessory package to transform an Element into a more dog-friendly version. Technically, this is not a new model in the lineup, but it's one of those special features that the press and crowds at auto shows, Burgess himself included, were wagging their tongues over. But, he writes, it's almost too much of a good thing. After a week of testing, his dog, Bogart, a floppy-eared shepherd, decided he would rather walk. Burgess says it’s a great idea that doesn't work out in real life. First of all, he was too big for the crate and too spoiled to ride in it. The kennel and ramp easily pull out of the Element. The rest of the Dog Friendly features are kind of cool. The dog-bone pattern floor mats look awesome, though they can be a little slippery if your shoes are wet. The hair-resistant second row seat covers look cool and work very well. Really, all of the accessories other than the kennel are nice, and Honda should consider selling them individually. In the end, Burgess writes that while he still likes the Element, he likes his dog more.

Honda had a fleet-wide 23.6 MPG fuel economy average in the 2009 modely ear. Toyota Motor Corp., which was tied for first in 2007, slipped to third with 23.2 MPG. The EPA reports "real world" fuel economy rankings and carbon emissions. Honda Begins Operation of New Solar Hydrogen Station
Los Angeles-based Station to Re-fuel Honda Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle
01/27/2010 - TORRANCE, Calif. -
Honda today began operation of a next generation solar hydrogen station prototype at the Los Angeles Center of Honda R&D Americas, Inc., intended for ultimate use as a home refueling appliance capable of an overnight refill of fuel cell electric vehicles.
Designed as a single, integrated unit to fit in the user's garage, Honda's next generation Solar Hydrogen Station reduces the size of the system, while producing enough hydrogen (0.5kg) via an 8-hour overnight fill for daily commuting (10,000 miles per year) for a fuel cell electric vehicle.
The previous solar hydrogen station system required both an electrolyzer and a separate compressor unit to create high pressure hydrogen. The compressor was the largest and most expensive component and reduced system efficiency. By creating a new high differential pressure electrolyzer, Honda engineers were able to eliminate the compressor entirely - a world's first for a home use system. This innovation also reduces the size of other key components to make the new station the world's most compact system, while improving system efficiency by more than 25% (value calculated based on simulations) compared to the solar hydrogen station system it replaces.

They Call It Puppy Love: Honda's Dog-Friendly Element
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — Hercules, a Chihuahua mix, went car shopping recently without the slightest worry of pushy salespeople, high-pressure tactics or getting a loan.
Hercules looked over a new "dog friendly" Honda Element at a dog park here at the invitation of USA TODAY, which got a peek at the vehicle prior to its public debut Thursday at the New York International Auto show.
The new version of the Element is sort of a rolling Ritz-Carlton for the canine set. It features a built-in bed in the cargo area, a private electric cooling fan, a spill-proof water bowl and a mesh net to keep animals separated from people. Rubber floor mats are embellished with a dog-bone design.
Being shown at the show as a concept, a final version of the pooch-coddling 2009 Element will go on sale in late summer, setting up a dogfight of sorts with Toyota.
